Caltex continues to power club rugby

Today we mark the beginning of a renewed and extended contract to be a part of the premier club tournaments organised by the SLRFU - the Caltex Inter-club Rugby League tournament and the Caltex Interclub Rugby Knock-out tournament. Caltex is committed to powering these two tournaments till 2005, said the Head of Sales and Marketing of Caltex Lubricants Vajira Abeysinghe at a press briefing held at CR and FC pavilion on Wednesday.

Rugby spells out power, speed and performance. The 'Caltex Rugby' brand association made it easier for the company to come to a decision in continuing with the sponsorship along with the committed support extended by the union.

The union has made elaborate plans on telecasting one key match every saturday on television.

This is a giant step taken by the union to take the game to the masses. In addition to the live coverage on TV other promotions planned by Caltex will definitely add to the excitement of the sports loving public. Radio promotions for listeners to win exciting promotional giveaways from Caltex and events like selection of the Most Popular Ruggerite and the Most popular Rugby Club is in the pipe line of action for this season as well.

The selection of the Best Ruggerite, Best Rugby Club, Best Captain, Best Forward and Best Three Quarter would continue with the tradition begun by Caltex two years ago.

Sports and Caltex has always gone hand in hand. Our close association with other sports such as Motor racing has contributed in maintaining one of the largest racing teams and encourages new talent to be a part of Team Caltex.

We have been - supporting club cricket by sponsoring SSC to mould the best for the nation and also school boxing by enhancing and supporting talent to shine. We have also supported Indoor Cricket - experiencing a new way to play the most popular sport are a few examples that could be brought about to our closeness to sport. In all these instances the company has chosen each sport keeping in mind the contribution each sport has to the sporting communities at large.

The President of the Sri lanka Rugby Football Union Mohan Balasuriya thanked Caltex Lubricants for coming forward to sponsor club rugby for the fourth successive year. The union has launched a development program in the rural areas in a bid to popularise the game in the provinces. The SLRFU hopes to conduct more tournaments in the outstations to give the ruggerites from rural areas an opportunity to show their prowess.

The union hopes to have a professional structure for rugby.

Women's rugby is catching up in the country and the SLRFU will conduct district level tournaments to give them more exposure. (R.S.)
