PM assures security of Muttur citizens, promises compensation

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who met a group of citizens from Muttur yesterday assured them of all necessary steps to ensure their security. The Premier also promised compensation to all those affected during the recent unrest in the area.

The Prime Minister accompanied by Ministers Thilak Marapana, Milinda Moragoda and UNP Chairman Malik Samarawickrema participated in a long discussion with Muslim Congress Parliamentarians led by SLMC Leader Rauff Hakeem at the Navy Headquarters in the afternoon of yesterday (24). Religious and lay leaders of Muttur attended the discussion.

The Premier, thanking Minister Hakeem for his relentless efforts to find solutions to the problems of his fellowmen during difficult times expressed his sorrow about the recent unrest in the Muttur area and assured that all those who were affected during the restive period will be duly compensated and steps will be taken to solve the political issues concerned through discussion. He also instructed the relevant segments concerned to take measures to restore normalcy in the day-to-day life of the people and maintain law and order.

The Premier further emphasised that the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government and the LTTE meant only a cessation of hostilities but never meant to be an interval for enforcement of law and order.

The Prime Minister prior to the discussion in Muttur discussed the Muttur issue at length with MP R. Sambandan in the evening of April 23 and is expected to meet the Buddhist and lay leaders in the South today (25).
