It is a great victory if all political parties agree on a common agenda to bring peace and prosperity to the country." Minister of Mass Communication Imithiaz Barkeer Markar said addressing the Thrift and Credit Society of the Co-operative Society of Palayangoda in the Beruwala electorate to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Society. The Minister said that it was noteworthy that the Thrift and Credit Co-operative Society has lasted for 75 years. He thanked the members of the Gunatillaka family for their devotion to protect the Society for 75 years. "Already 55 years have lapsed since gaining Independence and 25 years the country has been involved in an ethnic war. When the country regained Independence it was second to Japan in Asia but now all other Asian countries have developed and Sri Lanka is backward. The political Leaders have to consider seriously why Sri Lanka is backward and why it could not march forward with those countries," the Minister queried. "The war has brought destruction to the country, and in the past people lived in fear until their sons and daughters came home as there was explosion of bombs. However, there is peace in the country for nearly one year. However, there should be durable peace for development of the country," he stressed. H.A. Sajantha Haththelle the President of 'Sanasa' of Palayangoda, Mahinda Jayawardene - the Secretary Nehru Gunatillaka also spoke. |
