Mangala's allegation false and baseless -Prof. Peiris

Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris said yesterday that he was surprised to hear the allegations by PA MP Mangala Samaraweera that he influenced the customs to obtain the release of a container carrying LTTE cargo.

He said the allegation is completely false and baseless. "I have made no request whatsoever, written, oral direct or indirect to anyone as per the allegations by Mr. Samaraweera. Moreover, I was not even aware of such a container in the Port, he said.

He made this remarks during the weekly Cabinet briefing held at the Government Information Department yesterday. "I checked with the Director General of Customs and the Secretary of the Treasury Charitha Ratwatte but they knew nothing about it", he said.

The Minister further said that he was not surprised about the allegations made by the SLFP media spokesman but it is regrettable to note that a responsible person such as an official spokesman of a political party making such false allegations. - (NG/MF)
