Job Net centres to ensure equal opportunities for all

Sigiriya group correspondent

No discrimination is possible through the Job Net since the most eligible candidates are selected on merit, said Minister of Labour and Employment, Mahinda Samarasinghe.

The Minister said the Job Net places the most eligible candidates on top whereby a culture of freedom of employment would be established.

He was speaking after the opening of the ninth Job Net Centre in Kandy.

"The Net operates on its own and no government interferences are possible and also not intended in our designing", the Minister said.

"The Job Net links with the Global Market and even foreign employment could be channelled through the Net. This also conveys a good message to our youths. It enlightens your education for those who get their educational targets accomplished they need not loom around in uncertainty. Their learning and training will not be wasted - but they would be definitely rewarded", Samarasinghe said.

The Minister said that he was well aware of the problems faced by the MPs' who have to help their staunch supporters and those who were politically victimised.

The Minister said that he had heard such tales not from the Kandy stage even from other stages when he went to open Job Net Centres.

"I myself have a similar situation in my electoral district in Kalutara. But even with regret, I would like to say that no political favouritism could be made through the system", he said.

But those who are thrown out politically victimised would be looked into and suitable remedial measures would be made at different levels, but not through the Net, the Minister said.

The Minister said 17 Job Net Centres will be established in the country together with the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.

The Vocational Training Authority will handle Job training programmes along with the Ministry of Labour.

Those who get selected through the Job Net will be provided required training under these programmes.
