by Ananda Kannangara The Employment and Labour Ministry will hold this year's National May Day celebrations in and around the Colombo Municipal Council premises in a carnival atmosphere under the theme "Tribute to the workers" (Shrama Upahara). The celebrations will commence at 10 a.m. "This is the first occasion a National May Day is celebrated by a Government with the people's participation in a joyful manner by holding musical shows, trade stalls, flower and plant sales, educational exhibitions and numerous forms of cultural events, presented by public and private sector institutions," Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe told at a press briefing in Colombo yesterday. He said that the Cabinet approval has already been obtained to conduct this May day in a unique manner with the participation of thousands of people irrespective of their party differences. A special committee consisting of Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe, Interior Minister John Amaratunga, Cultural Affairs Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku and Tourism Minister Gamini Lokuge has been appointed to look into the arrangements on a directive of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Colombo MMC Deputy Mayor Azad Sally will also assist the organisers to conduct the program. Minister Amaratunga said that the three Armed Forces and the Police will conduct special band drill displays and drill display shows. In addition to these events carnivals, stage dramas, art exhibitions, health camps, a tennis tournament, a baila contest, a Go- kart race and vintage car rally, wrestling and gymnastic displays, shows with cultural and western bands and films will be held. Entrance to the National Museum will be free on this day and the Ministry of Irrigation will conduct an exhibition under the theme "Mahaveli Mahima". |
