Lanka Star 2003 awards night to present Lanka Star and Merit Awards for excellence in packaging will be held today at the Trans Asia Hotel Colombo from 7 pm.

Prof G. L Peiris, Minister of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion will be the Chief Guest at the ceremony while Ravi Karunanayake, Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs and Kingsley T Wickramaratne, Governor of the Southern Province have been invited to be present as Guests of Honour.

The Sri Lanka Institute of Packaging and the National Packaging Centre conduct the Lanka Star Awards competition biennially as an integral part of its endeavours to promote excellence in packaging and are aimed at stimulating interest in improving packaging standards in Sri Lanka. Locally produced packaging materials, consumer packages and transport packages of outstanding quality are selected by a panel of experts for the award of Stars and Merits.

The first ever Lanka Star packaging contest was held in 1987 in conjunction with the 17th Asian Packaging Congress and Lankapak 87 packaging exhibition held at Hotel Lanka Oberoi, Colombo.

The Star Award and Merit Award winners of Lanka Star competition are eligible to enter their winning entries to the Asia Star and World Star Contests, which are held annually.

A fair number of members of our Institute have repeatedly won both Asia Star and World Star contests showing that the local packaging industry has developed and reached international standards during the past decade.

Judging of Lanka Star 2003 packaging contest - the ninth of the series since '87 was held on Saturday March 29 2003 at the auditorium of the Ingrin Institute of Printing and Graphics with the Executive Director of the National Packaging Centre, the Chairman of the Lanka Star 2003 contest acting as the Technical Coordinator and five senior members from the local packaging, printing and food processing industries as members of the panel of judges.

A total of 60 entries in the consumer, transport and packaging material categories were subjected for evaluation by this panel of judges and 17 entries submitted by 11 companies - A.M.J. Industries & services Ltd., Mabroc Teas Pvt Ltd., Universal Packaging Pvt Ltd., Packages Lanka Pvt Ltd., Standad Trading Company Pvt Ltd., Euro-Scan Exports Pvt Ltd, Midaya Packaging Industries Pvt Ltd., Tuffline Ltd., Packwell Holdings Pvt Ltd., Phoenix Injection Mouldings Ltd., and JF&I Printers received Lanka Stars while 14 entries submitted by 8 companies - A.M.J. Industries & Services Ltd., Tinpack Pvt Ltd., Universal Packaging Pvt Ltd., Varna Ltd., Acme Printing & Packaging Pvt Ltd., Euro Scan Exports Pvt Ltd., JF&I Printers and Packwell Holdings Pvt Ltd., won Merit Awards at this contest.

The panel of judges were requested to nominate the best entry for a special President's Award which is a new feature introduced for the first time this year and the winner to receive the President's Awards will be divulged at the Awards Night on 25th April 2003.

The Asian Packaging Federation added a new category named Student Star for its Asia Star contest in 2002.

Being an active member of the APF the SLIP launched its first Students Star contest, in mid 2002 but as the response was very poor it was decided to introduce this category along with the Lanka Star contest this year.
