The curfew imposed in Muttur and suburbs since last week was lifted last morning for the distribution of food rations among the displaced civilians.

Trincomalee SSP Upali Hewage told the Daily News that despite isolated curfew violations, no major incidents have been reported in the area on Saturday and Sunday. "The situation is totally under control and parties are now preparing to have discussions to prevent further clashes," Hewage said.

Three people have so far been killed due to clashes between two rival groups and several people injured. Hundreds of people took refuge at school buildings and religious places following these clashes.

The government took steps to defuse the situation after sending additional troops and Police officers to strengthen the security in the area.

The LTTE area leadership and the Mosque Federation in Muttur have not agreed with the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission to hold their scheduled meeting either in Sampur or Muttur area as they felt insecure at these two locations, SLMM Spokesman Teitur Torkelsson said.

Torkelsson told the Daily News that the two groups agreed to hold this scheduled meeting at the Trincomalee SLMM office but they have not confirmed their participation by noon yesterday.
