Govt not prepared to sacrifice young lives for war - UNP spokesman

by Ananda Kannangara

UNP media spokesman Gayantha Karunatillaka yesterday said the JVP leadership was expecting a cruel war once again with the LTTE which will lead to another destruction at a time the Government is taking every possible step to create a peaceful atmosphere in the country.

"People are aware that after a lapse nearly two decades they were able to celebrate the Sinhala and Hindu New Year in a peaceful manner this year due to farsighted policies, of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to end the war," Karunatillaka said.

He said that the intention of the Government is not to drag the lives of innocent youth once again to war. Quoting the recent speech by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at Matara, Karunatilaka said that the Premier is not prepared to send innocent youth once again to a war.

The Premier said that only the sons of innocent parents in villages are killed in the war.

Referring to a recent news release issued by JVP criticising the Premier's speech he made at Matara the UNP media spokesman said that it was a pity that the JVP has not even mentioned about the fate of innocent youth if war erupts again.

We are asking whether the people who want a war will send their children to the battlefront,".
