GCE A/L begins today

The first stage of the G.C.E. A/L examination begins today at 1,781 centres throughout the country.

The exam is scheduled to continue until May 20, with a break for Vesak on May 14, 15 and 16. The second stage will start from May 17.

A total of 251,727 candidates with 212,194 school candidates and 39,533 private candidates are expected to sit for the examination.

There will be 265 main coordinating centres. For the first time, 970 students will sit the examination in two media - English/Tamil and Sinhala/English.

The GCE A/L exam which was earlier held in August was advanced to April for the first time last year so that candidates can start university the same year, without a long pause like in the past.
