by Sarath Malalasekera The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probing the violence at Orugodawatte subsequent to the detection by the public of a 13-year-old girl chained inside a house on March 26 revealed that the Police officers both at managerial and frontline levels, who contributed to this public order situation by their inaction, should be severely dealt with. At the same time the Police should make all efforts to bring those who caused damage to Police facilities and destroyed the scene of the crime, the CID team's report said. The special CID investigation team led by ASP J.A.K. Mark further revealed that Orugodawatte is a classic example of an ignorant society reacting to Police inaction. "Therefore, it is time now for the Police to engage more on proactive Police strategies and maintain the lines of communication intact with the society. The assistance of both the print and the electronic media should be solicited whenever possible to inform the society. Situations of this nature could be easily averted if these strategies are put into practise coupled with a proper system of checks and balances," the report said. The CID findings also revealed that the public should not have acted in the manner they acted on the day of the incident. The public should not have taken the law into their hands. They should obey the law of the land, the report added. The CID DIG Lionel Gunatilleke has directed the Director Colombo Crime Division (CCD) SP Sarath Lugoda to arrest all the suspects who are involved in the incident and produce them before Court. |
