Kuliyapitiya group correspondent Kuliyapitiya Urban Council at its monthly meeting, presided over by the Chairman Shelton Nimal Pieris (UNP) unanimously decided to install a garbage recycling plant behind the Weerambuwa cemetery. The Vice Chairman Luxman Adikari (UNP) moving the motion to that effect said, the garbage collected in the town area dumped behind the Weerambuwa cemetery causing a grave environmental pollution in the area. It is a breeding place of flies and mosquitoes. The UC is duty bound to conserve the environment. The only remedy, we have, is recycling the garbage to produce compost. The chairman said, it was a very timely motion. Garbage is a major issue pertaining to every local body. Producing compost recycling the garbage is a costly project. Yet, as the garbage is a grave and serious environmental issue, we have to pay attention on that. The motion was passed without a division. The Vice Chairman moving the motion said: "The council should inaugurate a middle class housing scheme in the council owned five acres behind the bus-depot. The town is densely populated now. The price of a perch of land is over Rs. two lakhs. That price is beyond the reach of middle class wage earners. If a land was bought, another few lakhs is needed to build a house. To relieve such middle class wage earners from a heavy burden, I propose to introduce a housing scheme in the land owned by the council. In addition, we will be able to minimise the fragmentation of coconut lands, if a housing scheme was introduced. The Chairman seconding the motion said, the policy so far adopted was distribution of blocks of lands among those who need a building block to build a house. That is not a solution for the burning housing issue. This motion proposes to build houses by the council in our own land and to sell them to those who need houses. The motion was adopted unanimously. |
