Lucrative employment opportunities available worldwide for qualified nurses - Director ACHS

The American College of Health Sciences (Pvt) Ltd. (ACHS) for excellence in Health Education affiliated to the Pacific Union College, California, USA, established to provide a degree course in nursing, was inaugurated at Peradeniya, recently.

The Chief Guest on the occasion was Dr. Athula Kahanda Liyanage, Director General of Health Services, Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Welfare and the Guest of Honour was Dr. (Mrs.) Julia Pearce, Director Pacific Union College (PUC) school of nursing USA. Dr. Harsha de Silva, Private Medical Affairs, Ministry of Health, and Prof. N. Senanayake, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya.

Dr. Leonard Ranasinghe, Director of the ACHS in his introductory remarks at the opening ceremony said that in his sojourns abroad especially in the Western countries, he became aware of the increasing shortage of nurses worldwide and of the lucrative opportunities available to qualified candidates not only in the USA but also in other parts of the world.

Hence he said through a partnership of persons interested in providing health related training programs that will qualify Sri Lankan students to apply for numerous foreign employment opportunities the ACHS was established. He finally said the primary purpose of the ACHS is not to be a money - making business but rather to provide a course of training with the highest standards.

He said the students will be trained in the English medium and provided with a curriculum that would qualify them to take the American Nursing Board Exam which would provide the opportunities for employment worldwide.

Dr. Athula Kahanda Liyanage, Director General of Health Services Ministry of Health, The Chief Guest in his address said that the objective of the project is to cater to the demands of nurses in the international market and thereby provide an opportunity to the educated unemployed student population in Sri Lanka who he said have already cut a figure in the field of education internationally.

Besides he said it will help the country to enhance its foreign exchange earnings just as its being done by the housemaids employed abroad and would be a supportive arm in solving the unemployment problem of the country.

K. L. Jayatissa, the Registrar of the Institute proposing the vote of thanks said that the entire programme was the brainchild of Dr. Leonard B. Ratnayake. He said the three-year Diploma course of the (ACHS) has been approved by the Ministry of Health.
