Bingiriya group correspondent It has been decided to form student's moral development societies in all government schools in the North Western Province with the beginning of the 2nd school term next month and all school heads have been instructed accordingly by H. K. U. K. Weerawardhana, the Provincial Director of Education of the North Western Education Department. In his special circular to all School Principals, Zonal Directors of Education and Divisional Directors of Education in the NWP, the Provincial Director of Education has pointed out that the involvement of senior school children in anti-social activities is reported and this situation is increasing rapidly in the present society. Due to lack of moral guidance and proper awareness about human values have been the reasons for these tragic events among students and hence steps should be taken to remedy this trend by forming moral development societies in all schools under a counselling committee headed by the school principal and other senior school teachers. There seems to be a collapse of moral values in the student population due to various social ills and educational authorities have to play a major role in correcting the attitudes of students for the good of the society, the Provincial Director has emphasised thus. The prime objective of forming these societies is to award the society with a morally developed and cultured student population to the country, he has pointed out. After forming these societies, all schools should implement sil observing campaigns, meditation programmes, blood donation campaigns, programmes to care for elders, programmes to pay tribute to parents and teachers, shramadana campaigns to restore holy places and hospitals and other important public places. These societies should be formed under three levels such as Primary, Junior and Senior. Students from Grade one to Grade five belong to the primary level. Students from Grade 6 to Grade 11 belong to the Junior level and students from Grade 12 to Grade 13 belong to the Senior level. However, the Minister of Education, Human Resources Development and Cultural Affairs Dr. Karunasena Kodithuwakku has appreciated this programme. |
