Hill Club annual ranking tennis tournament from April 13-15

by Richard Dwight

The Hill club annual ranking tennis tournament, one amongst other events of the Nuwara Eliya holiday season, is scheduled to be held from the 13th to 15th April 2003 on the four clay courts of the club.

This tournament has a history of its own and was popular until it became dormant to become defunct in the nineties.

Many a historic battle in the past for national championship was fought here between the tennis stalwarts from Ceylon and foreign players, to so become an accredited venue for the Ceylon tennis nationals. This tournament at the Hill Club was revived last year through the efforts of a member of the club, Hans Svendsen, who is spearheading the tournament this year as well. It will, as always continue to have the patronage of the SLTA, who are conducting this competition under the guidance of its tournament Director, Bernard Perera.

The sponsors at this tournament are SriLankan Airlines, Lion Air, Maersk/Sealand and yet others.

It was gathered from Perera and Svendsen at a media briefing held at the Trans Asia Hotels that there would be eleven events, viz juniors - boys and girls under-16, singles and doubles.

Open - Mens' singles/doubles, women' singles/doubles and mixed doubles. Veterans over 45 singles and doubles.

Most of last years winners are expected to be in the fray this year as well, in Amrit Rupesinghe, Mahesha Seneviratne Rohan de Silva, Dananjaya Mayadunne, Sasith Wickramasinghe, Fancy Paramanathan, Shalini Perera and Tiyumi Abeysinghe. Those who stood out in the veterans category were Sundaralingam, Lafir and Bandara from the Police.

The winners will receive attractive prizes in the form of airline tickets and awards in cash too, will be made.

Monies accruing at this tournament will be made use of to promote floodlit tennis, and go to purchase lights for fame. There will in addition be, exhibition matches between wheel-chair tennis players some of whom will act as umpires.
