New-look Pakistan win Sharjah Cup Vernon Gunasekera reporting from Sharjah.... Pakistan won the Sharjah Tournament powered by youth defeating Zimbabwe by 8 wickets in the final under lights on Thursday. Mohamed Samy (pace) (44/3), Shoaib Malik (off spin) (29/3) helped by other bowlers restricted Zimbabwe to 168. Pakistan's batsmen Tawfeek Umar and Yoosuf Yohana showed the way hitting boundaries round the ground. Umar (81) (not out) 10 boundaries in 124 deliveries, while Yohana scored 61 in 69 deliveries hitting 6 boundaries. Javed Miandad coached the Pakistani team to remain unbeaten throughout the tournament without 8 experienced players and to be winners of Sharja Cup with a prize money of US $ 40,000. Runners-up Zimbabwians got prize money of US $ 30,000. It was nice to see the Pakistani seniors encouraging the newcomers showing good team spirit. Pakistan openers started off carefully though their target was an easy 169 runs. Mohamed Hafees was caught for 2 by Wishart at first slip off a delivery from Zimbabwian Captain Heath Streak, who bowled good line and length. After another two overs Streak had Faisal Iqbal caught by Renie at square leg.In the first ten overs Pakistanis were able to score 50 runs out of which 17 were extras with the opening bowler Blignaught bowling consecutive wides. The first half century was scored by Tawfeek Umar in 88 deliveries with six fours and Johana scored his half century in 57 deliveries with a six and five fours. Pakistanis won the match in 35.2 overs. |
