Ashida Dhanatunge wins Gold at Chess in UK Ashida Dhanatunge, a 14-year-old Sri Lankan student in London, distinguished himself when he won a Gold Medal at the All-England 'Royal and Sun Alliance Panathlon Competition' held at Brunel University (West London) while representing Pimlico School of Central London. Ashida began playing chess at Ananda College in Colombo when he was nine years old, learning from senior players. He first emerged Year Five Champ of Chess in Ananda in 1999. He was then selected to represent his school at the Under-11 and Under-13 Annual Ananda-Nalanda Chess Tournament. He has participated for four years of the seven consecutive years that Ananda has won this annual encounter. He was a member of the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club at the Russian Centre in Colombo, and participated in 2 membership chess tournaments, where he won a Silver and a Bronze medal. He was selected to the Under 13 chess team of Ananda College and participated at the Sri Lanka Schools Chess Tournament twice in 2000 and 2001. In year 2000, his team came third in the Western Province and fourth in the All Island challenge, which was held Maliyadeva College in Kurunegala. In 2001, he was a member of Under 13 team of Ananda College which emerged Champions of the Western Province Schools tournament and qualified to participate in the All Island Challenge in which they emerged Runners Up. |
