Hot competition expected at Radella Hill Climb

The Radella Speed Hill Climb is to be held on 15th April 2003, organised by SLARDAR on a grand scale. A total of seven motorcycle events and twelve motorcar events will be worked out on this day.

These events include four championship events of the SLARDAR championship 2003 which is co-sponsored by McFoil - namely Group 'A' over 12 Kg/HP, Group 'M' and 'T' up to 3500cc, Ford Formula 1600cc and Group 'MX' bikes up to 125 cc. Entries from thirty six motorcycles and 64 motorcars have been received by SLARDAR.

The Radella Hill Club runs through Somerset Estate and is on part of the road which is known by many travellers as the Colombo/Nuwara Eliya short cut. The meet is expected to commence at 9.00 a.m. and conclude around 2.00 p.m.

There will be no practice sessions as in the past. The drivers and riders request for a practice day is being considered for the future.

However, this year drivers and riders will have to be well prepared and leave no room for a gear miss or slide at a corner which would effect their timing. Competition is expected to be very fierce in most events.

Last year many of the placing were within the same second and the electronic timing used was vital for accurate results.

The course record at Radella is held by Rohan de Silva in his Modified Formula with a time of 31.85 seconds. He is challenged by Suranjith Premadasa also in a Modified Formula this year.

In the Group 'A' Cars - Over 12KG/HP the Championship Event - the record is currently held by Dammmika Peiris with a time 44.01 seconds.

However, he will have stiff competition from Nishan Wasalathanthri, Sajad Zuhair, Rohan Wijeratne and many other challengers.

The Formula Ford Championship event will be hotly contested by Rohan de Silva, Romani de Silva, Rizvi Farook, Dinesh Jayawardene and Harsha de Silva. The existing record for this event is held by Romani de Silva with a time of 33.15 seconds.

A battle for supremacy is expected in the Group 'M' and 'T' cars up to 3500cc championship event between Dinesh Deheragoda, Pradeep Jayewardane, Romani de Silva, Aravinda Premadasa, Nalin Perera and Nishan Weerasooriya. The existing record for this event is held by Nishan with a time of 33.23 seconds.

Experienced drivers Yoga Perera, Zacky Ismail, Bri Ponnambalam, Javid Wahab and Sheran Fernando are also expected to return fast timings.

A McFoil team making an appearance at Radella for the first time have drivers in the calibre of Rohan Wijeratne and Sajad Zuhair in Ford Lasers, Niahal Premasiri and Ishraq Wahab in Hondas, Nihal Weerasinghe and also Mahen Thambiah in their KIA Pride.

Also, much is expected of McFoil team member Lakmal de Silva in his Modified Austin Mini.
