Jayasuriya quits as captain Sri Lanka's new chairman of selectors Lalith Kaluperuma confirmed yesterday that Sanath Jayasuriya has relinquished his post as Sri Lanka captain. Kaluperuma said that Jayasuriya had submitted a letter to him requesting to be released from the captaincy. Soon after the World Cup in South Africa, Jayasuriya wanted to resign as captain, but was persuaded to continue by the Sports Minister. Jayasuriya led Sri Lanka in the recently concluded four-nation Sharjah Cup tournament where the team failed to qualify for the final. Kaluperuma said a new captain will be appointed before the New Zealand cricketers arrive for a two-Test tour next week. Kaluperuma said the four-member selection committee which also comprises Aravinda de Silva, Roger Wijesuriya and Ashley de Silva had not discussed who should succeed Jayasuriya, although his long standing deputy Marvan Atapattu is the hot favourite for the post. The selectors will also take up the issue of whether to appoint a vice captain, especially for a home series. Jayasuriya (33) took over the captaincy from Arjuna Ranatunga in 1999 and led the country to 18 wins out of 38 Tests and 67 wins out of 119 one-day internationals as captain. - [S.T.] |
