A true Australian touch at UBG

by Talia Jayasekera

The cool ambience that is the Union Bar & Grill (UBG) will undergo a truly extraordinary transformation next month thanks to their new Executive Chef Antony McNeil.

The Australian chef, renowned world over for his mouth-watering culinary expertise, will revamp the UBG's menu to reflect a more healthy and nutritious life style that will include low fat and vegetarian options.

In just three short weeks at the Hilton JAIC Tower, Chef Antony has replaced the standard menu of UBG with an innovative and scrumptious a la carte menu that dazzles the mind with its fine food and excellent wines.

The present menu, which consists of mostly Italian specialities like pastas and fettucini, will be swapped for a more varied menu that will effectively show the changing times and tastes of society. Chef Antony and his team will discuss this anomaly and design the menu appropriately. The UBG prides itself in having a menu that has something for everyone.

Chef Antony uses the best seasonal produce, sourced locally and internationally, to tickle the taste buds of our Sri Lankan folk.

His passion for his work has led on journey throughout the world into the kitchens of some of the most exclusive and trendy hotels and upmarket restaurants.

The UBG, in its five year tenure has earned a reputation for the finest grills, sea food and buffets in town.

Coupled with a new, phenomenal menu will be the relaunched look of the UBG into a more contemporary jazz and blues oriented bar, offering an exciting yet relaxing dining experience. This new look will unfold during the month of May and will offer signature dishes that make the UBG a class above the rest.

The UBG will concentrate its efforts in repositioning themselves as stylish and unique dining venue for those with a penchant for good food and good music.

Governor's cup 2003 in Nuwara Eliya tomorrow

by Tharika Goonathilake

The cool clime of Nuwara Eliya this weekend will play host to one of the country's greatest sporting events, crowds and high glamour, with the Governor's Cup 2003 which takes up tomorrow.

Held for the 4th consecutive year and hosted by SriLankan Airlines, the event is a part of the Airlines' strategy to promote Sri Lanka as an exceptionally viable and attractive destination, says Sri Lankan Airlines CEO Peter Hill.

"This event has given us a great opportunity to promote Sri Lanka as an attractive destination among the tourists who come here for leisure or considering investment," Peter Hill told a media conference at the Ceylon continental last week. There will be activities to celebrate the New Year holidays, and taking top billing among them is undoubtedly the horse racing season, luring jockeys, thoroughbreds, visitors and the sports media both from Sri Lanka and overseas.

Governor's Cup Day will infuse all the attendant glamour and an exciting international flavour into the event.

One of the main highlights of this year's races will be the maiden race for Sri Lankan thoroughbreds where ten locally bred horses will run together for the first time. Top favourites in this year's SriLankan Airlines Governor's Cup which is the premier long distance race, are previous winners Emperado, Stormy Warrior, Gamini Kodiwatuwakku's 'Libo Queen', Anurath Abeyratne's 'Final Authority', Court of Appeal', and "Pick Pocket" Gamini Jayaratne's 'Mr. Belvedere', Nigel Austin's 'Ancient Warrior' and others like 'Khaalis', "Crowning Star", 'Savage', and 'Intel'.

The local sprinters who will race to the finishing line at this year's SriLankan Airlines Governor's Cup Day are 'Helen of Troy', 'Fire Cracker', 'Simply Inspring' and 'Korean Dancer'.

Aslam Kader from India rides at Nuwara Eliya this year for the Monaro Stables while Rahul Shinde rides for Devinda Senanayake. Vijay Gharat will ride for Dr. M. S. Noohu and Mumbai's S. Rajesh for Anurath Abeyratne.

SriLankan Airlines is at the forefront in promoting sports events in the country. Besides the Governor's Cup, the airline also actively promotes golf, surfing, rugby and more recently adventure sports.

Adventure sports centre from Tourist Board

The Sri Lanka Tourist Board, the Municipal Council of Nuwara-Eliya and the local operators of adventure sports in the area started an Adventure Sports Centre at the National Holiday Resort on the upper bank of lake Gregory on April 10.

The facilities available are hiking, mountain biking, cycling, trekking and boating on the lake. Nuwara-Eliya offers the highest number of natural attractions both to young and the old. There are 21 water falls where hikes can be undertaken. The Horton Plains offers even more opportunities with hikes to the peaks of Kirigalpoththa and Totupala where the strong and young can take part even in rainy weather and throughout the year.

The Galway Forest Reserve just behind the National Holiday Resort offers senior citizens guided bird watching walks where an hours walk enables one to see more than 30 species of hill country birds. A new pier is now being built to offer pedlos, dinghies, and motor boats. The motor boats are soon to be replaced by electric motor boats preserving the serenity of the area and preventing pollution of the lake totally.

Camping facilities are also offered during the season with barbeques and campfires as night entertainment.

An information centre has been established at the Victoria Park with the help of volunteers. It has a comprehensive library with maps of the area and serves as a centre for environmental education.
