UN Global Compact to be launched in Lanka The international business program - the United Nations Global Compact will be launched in Sri Lanka on April 21 at the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce. Senior executives of several leading Sri Lanka companies and 15 CEOs and leading businessmen from the US will attend the launch. Bradman Weerakoon, Secretary to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Chief Guest on the occasion will deliver the keynote address. The Global Compact, was initially proposed by The United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan in an address to the World Economic Forum in January 1999, when he challenged world business leaders to help build the social and environmental pillars required to sustain the new global economy and make globalisation work for all the world's people. The Compact encompasses nine principles in human rights, labour standards and the environment. The Compact requires participant companies to act on these principles in their own corporate domains. Today, the Global Concept has attracted hundreds of high-powered business entities from all over the world, evolving into the first global forum designed to address critical issues related to globalisation. The companies involved are diverse and represents different industries. The participating companies are all leaders; and they all aspire to manage global growth in a responsible manner which takes into consideration the interests and concerns of a broad spectrum of stakeholders which includes employees, investors, customers, advocacy groups, business partners and communities. Several leading companies in Sri Lanka have already received membership of the UN Global Compact. These include Aitken Spence & Co. Ltd., Ceylon Oxygen Co. Ltd., Cortex Ltd., Commercial Bank of Ceylon Ltd., Forbes and Walker Ltd., John Keells Holdings Ltd., and John Ward Ceylon (Pvt.) Ltd. The applications of more prestigious companies too are currently being processed. On behalf of its membership, the Chamber has also taken advantage of this special opportunity to organise one-to-one meetings with the visiting US delegation. The delegation will focus on business-to-business engagements with sectors such as Construction (Hambantota Harbour and similar large-scale projects), Telecommunications, Power and Energy as well as Tourism (hotels and travel). The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce views the launch of the UN Global Gateway Project in Sri Lanka as an event that will provide a major boost to Sri Lanka's position in the international business arena. |
