Four players suspended and a coach fined

Four players have been suspended and a coach of a division one club has been fined after they have been found guilty of breaching the players and officials code of conduct by the Disciplinary Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka. Ruchira Perera of SSC has been suspended in participating in two matches in tournaments conducted by the BCCSL with immediate effect after using obscene, offensive and insulting language on the playing field in the match between SSC and Bloomfield played at the SSC grounds.

Since he has already served one match suspension and the 2002/2003 season is concluded the suspension on match two will be effective during the 2003/2004 season. This will be in respect of the first match played in 2003/2004 season.

Meanwhile Ajith Cooray of Sebastianites SC has been suspended from cricket, cricket management or representation for a period of five years with effect from February 19, 2003 in terms of clause 30 C (1) of the constitution of the BCCSL for assaulting an umpire who officiated the match between Sebastianites SC and Air Force SC at the De Soysa Stadium on February 9.

Ashan Ranaweera of Moratuwa SC has been suspended for two matches in tournaments conducted by the BCCSL for using obscene language on the playing field. Since the 2002/2003 season is concluded the two match suspension will be effected in the season 2003/2004. The two match suspension will be in respect of the first two matches played in the 2003/2004 season.

Another player Ruwan Fernando the captain of Negombo CC has been suspended for two matches conducted by the BCCSL for abusing an umpire who officiated the match between Negombo CC and Matale CC. The Disciplinary Committee have also fined Dilip Prasanna the coach of Panadura SC a sum equivalent to a month's coaching fees paid by the BCCSL for showing dissent and threatening the umpires in the match between Panadura SC and NCC.
