Matugama airport project will start next month - Minister

"The construction work of the airport at Matugama will commence at the beginning of next month as the Prime Minister has approved the project. The Investment Board will make preliminary survey and commence the work to provide new employment avenues to youths of the "Pasdun Rata".

This was stated by Mahinda Samarasinghe, the Minister of Employment and Labour addressing the members of the UNP "Balamandalaya" of Matugama to commemorate the event of completing one year of the peace process of the Government, held at the Auditorium of Matugama.

With the commencement of the new project, it would provide new employment avenues to youths of Kalutara district. The tourist industry, new tourist hotels and other development projects would come up in Matugama area and under this massive project Kalutara district would be developed.

This year is named as a year of employment by the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Employment would implement a crash programme to create new employment opportunities, he added.

He stated that with the development of relationship with Italy and other foreign countries new employment opportunities would be provided to the unemployed. The Ministry will provide new employment avenues to more than twenty thousand within three months and five hundred youth will be selected for employment in Government sector. The private sector projects and also new self employment projects would be set up in the country.

Further he stated that the first employment "Piyasa" set up at Agalawatta this month will set up seventeen employment centres in the country and within two years the unemployment problem would be definitely solved and a national employment concept would be formulated.

He said, "Already fifty three computers were given to schools in Matugama education zone and computer system of education would be popularised even in difficult area schools. Under this programme the computers were given to Divisional Secretariat offices and Pradeshiya Sabhas in the country.
