10,000 enterprises under REAP in South - Minister Kularatna

by Hambantota Special Correspondent

Under the Rural Economic Advancement Project (REAP), the Government has focused its attention to help initiate 10,000 (ten thousand) small, medium and large scale enterprises in the Southern Province as a measure to increase agriculture based production, Southern Region Development Minister Ananda Kularatna, said.

He made these observations at a ceremony held to award certificates to women who underwent training in different vocations conducted by the RCAC in association with the Southern Development Authority (SDA), at Zahira NS, Hambantota, recently. Minister Kularatna said, new entrepreneurs who hope to start enterprises could obtain loans from Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 5.5 million.

Under REAP we have also taken measures to modernize 22 fairs with basic facilities in the Hambantota district.

He said on the instructions of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, we have been able to bring mega development projects to this part of the country. Minister Kularatna said, 52% of the population in the Hambantota district are women.

We have initiated various kinds of income generation programmes to enhance the living condition of the women in the district.

Deputy Chairman of Committee Siri Andrahennadi said, it is necessary to have peace in the country for the economic progress. Primary objective of the people of the country is peace. Some opportunist political parties try to obstruct the peace process as they will not have a political future when peace is established in the country. But the people of this country cannot be fooled by the opportunist political parties further more.

He said the rays of peace have induced the other countries to come forward to assist build the nation. Many countries have shown their willingness to strengthen our economy by assisting in various ways. Therefore the primary aim of the Government is to establish peace in whatever way possible. But it is as pity to note that some power hungry political parties try to deceive the masses saying various kinds of false allegations against the Government.

GA, Hambantota district Ananda Amarathunga also spoke. Hambantota district Director of SDA P. N. Wijerathna delivered the welcome speech.
