Relic enshrinement in Athugala Buddha statue

The enshrinement of sacred relics in the head of the 88 cubit Buddha statue built on the 'Athugala' rock at Kurunegala will take place at the auspicious time of 10.40 a.m. on March 27.

The Ven. Thumbulle Sri Sheelakkhanda Chief Sanghanayake thera of Wayamba Palatha of the Asgiriya Chapter and Ven. Mugunuwatawana Sri Siddhatta Chief Sanghanayake thera of Wayamba Palatha of the Malwatte Chapter will officiate at the ceremony.

Ananda Wijetilleke Publicity Secretary, Hasthishailapura Buduruwa Sanwardhana Samithiya said the sacred relics will be brought to the venue in a colourful procession from the Kurunegala YMBA hall earlier in the morning.

As a prelude to the enshrinement ceremony a public exposition of the sacred relics will be held at the Kurunegala YMBA hall from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today (March 26).

Set for National Tree Planting

Steps are being taken to hold the Kamburupitiya Divisional Secretariats National Tree Planting programme on a grand scale and already arrangements have been made to issue the plants and seedlings required.

Meanwhile plants are also to be issued from plant nurseries set up by Farmer Organisations and Agricultural Research Assistants at rural level.

Under this programme plants will be grown along the sides of the road and in barren lands in the Kamburupitiya divisional secretariat area.

Abductor gets five years' RI

A twenty-seven year old married man, who was indicted with abducting a fifteen year old girl and raping her, was sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment by Sisira de Abrew, High Court Judge, Kandy when he was found guilty of abduction after trial without a jury.

In this case, A. G. Amarasekera of Kohangahawela was indicted with abducting a 15-year-old girl and committing rape on her on May 15, 1999 at Kohangahawela, a village in the Naula police area.

The trial lasted several days and the evidence of five witnesses including the prosecutrix and her father were led and several productions were marked by State Counsel Dishna Warnakula.

It was also revealed that the accused and victim spent four days in that house, which was not occupied by anyone. During this period the accused had committed the offence on the victim on several occasions. On the fifth day two brothers of the accused took the victim to her parents who refused to take charge of her. Following day the father of the victim made a complaint of abduction and rape to the Naula police. State Counsel informed court that accused had been convicted twice for robberies. The accused admitted the convictions. All the witnesses were cross examined by defence counsel Piyasiri Abeykoon.

The trial Judge found the accused guilty to abduction charge and imposed five years' RI on him.
