By Panduka Senanayake According to a senior officer at Traffic Police Headquarters, about 40 per cent of three-wheeler drivers are without licences and not qualified to drive. That was the situation till recently when Traffic Police started cracking down on them. According to the officer, the police crackdown has now forced about 75 per cent of the offenders to obtain their licences. Explaining how this situation came about, the officer said that the three-wheeler is perhaps the only vehicle that could transport a small family and yet financially remains within the reach of Sri Lankans employed as housemaids in the Middle-East. Constant checks are carried out on three-wheelers and those found without a licence are taken to task. |
