China coal mine blast toll hits 42 --media BEIJING, March 24 (Reuters) - At least 42 people are known to have died after a gas explosion ripped through a coal mine in northern China, newspapers reported on Monday. Thirty people were still missing as rescue attempts continued at the Mengnanzhuang coal mine in Shanxi province following Saturday's blast, newspapers said. Local officials contacted by telephone declined comment. The official Xinhua news agency said 87 miners were underground at the time of the blast and state television said at least 15 people had survived. The gas explosion was the third to kill more than 10 people in the Shanxi area since February, prompting the provincial government to halt all coal mining operations from Sunday, Xinhua said without elaborating. At least 49 people were killed in mines around China last month, underscoring the dangers of working in the world's largest and deadliest mining industry. Mining accidents in China killed about 7,000 people last year. |
