Former Royal, Colombo University, CR & FC and Sri Lanka player, Dr. Maiya Gunasekera has been appointed the new Chairman of selectors for rugby by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Johnston Fernando.

The appointment has been made on recommendations made by the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union. Former Sri Lanka star player Chandrishan Perera and Sri Lanka Sevens team Manager Chaminda Rupasinghe are the other two members of the committee.

Dr. Gunasekera has devoted much of his time for rugby both as an SLRFU official, team manager, coach and a selector. He is a former President of the SLRFU and Western Province RFU. A consultant surgeon by profession, Dr. Gunasekera played for Royal in 1971 under Dr. Fred Perera a reputed neuro surgeon and both of them later Coached Royal with distinction.

Dr. Gunasekera takes over the chairmanship of the national rugby selection committee from Group Captain Tikiri Marambe, a former Trinity, Air Force and Sri Lanka player, who stepped down after a successful three-year term.

Dr. Gunasekera is no stranger to the job, having served as a selector for two years in 1991 and 1992 and has also been the chef de mission of the Sri Lanka contingent for the Asian Games in 1998, Bangkok.

A versatile player and a brilliant medical student during his day, Dr. Gunasekera won the top award for the Most Outstanding University Student in 1976. He also played for Sri Lanka in 1972 and 1974 Rugby Asiads and captained CR & FC in 1978. (D.W.)
