Kumara and Chandani winners

by Richard Dwight

The reign of Ajith Weerakkody, three times winner of the Annual Open Six-Mile Sea Swim ended, when Ajith Kumara of Dolphin Aquatic Club swam out winner last Sunday at the Water Stretch of Kinross.

It was organised by the Wellawatte Kinross Swimming and Life Saving Club for the 39th year, a event that has become an annual feature of the club, was sponsored by the Bank of Ceylon for the eight successive year.

The course spanning a distance of six miles from Kinross to Mt. Lavinia and back, had 60 men competing in the event.

Ajitha Kumara had to give of his best towards the end to stave off a stiff challenge from first runner-up Ruwan Silva, also of the Dolphin Aquatic Club.

They matched each other stroke for stroke, which took quite a bit from Kumara who had cramps and lay winded on the beach.

Kumara with a timing of 2 hours 32 mts and 2 secs. had edge over Silva by just two seconds, his timing being 2:32:04. Duraj Rangana of Dolphin Club came third with 2:35:54 sec.

Anisha Kumara of St. Peter's College was fourth with 2:42:59 secs. and Mahesh Dhanuska of Dolphin Club was placed fifth with 2:43:02 secs. The ladies six-mile sea swim was won by Pushpa Chandani of the Dolphin Aquatic Club for the fourth successive year. She registered a timing of 3 hours 2 mts. 55 seconds. Prethika Sadarie of Polhena Aquatic Club was second with 4:12:49 secs. Jadri Jayakkody of the Air Force third with 4:12:56 secs. and C.N. Wellappili came fourth with 4:27:01 secs. The chief guest Douglas Weerasinghe, Deputy General Manager Bank of Ceylon addressed the gathering before distributing the awards.
