Lankans confront Chinese Taipei by Bernard Perera Sri Lanka take on Chinese Taipei today at the Sugathadasa Stadium at 6.30 p.m. in the second game of the Asia Cup 2004 preliminary qualifying round game. Lankans won their first match last Friday against East Timor by 3 goals to 2. Chinese Taipei who met the Timorians on Sunday defeated them 3 goals to nil also at the same venue. Today's game will decide the qualifiers for round two, where they have to confront Syria, United Arab Emirates and Turkismenistan in October. Lankan soccerites who performed well during past few months playing against top teams in the South Asian Region, Pakistan, India, Maldives and Bangladesh are in peak form, though they failed to reach the finals. Under the guidance of Sampath Perera and Marcos Ferreira the boys are sure to help the country move onto round two. Dudley Steinwal who leads the team is the man who handles the strong defence line. Strikers Kasun Jayasuriya, E. B. Channa and Chatura Maduranga will put the finishing touches to the good passes sent by the midfielders. With these three segments combining well, things could end in favour of Lankans. Sandun Devinda must have a close watch on the Chinese Taipei strikers as they might penetrate through the defence from which they hope to get the maximum usage. As they too have a win under their belt they will also make every effort to have a win in this game with the intention of qualifying for round two. |
