by Kushani Ratnayake

The "Omanthai and Uyilankulam entry and exit points will be open on Sundays from April first", the spokesperson for the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Teitur Torkelsson said. The Army has informed the SLMM of the request made by the LTTE.

The International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) sources revealed that the LTTE has requested the Army to open the A9 road on Sundays from April first. The LTTE political wing has sent notification to the ICRC regarding the request.

"The ICRC is still awaiting for the notification from the Army Headquarters or from the Ministry of Defence regarding their position on the request, made by the political wing of the LTTE, for opening the road on Sundays", spokesperson for the ICRC Sukumar Rockwood said.

Meanwhile, the Local Military Authorities in Vavuniya and Jaffna indicated that they have received instructions from the Defence Ministry to open the A9 Road on Sundays. The roads will be open directly from the entry and exit points, from Omanthai, Uyilankulam and Muhamalai. At present the road is open from Monday to Saturday, from 7.00 a.m to 5.30 p.m.
