LTTE is not sole representative of Tamils - TULF Leader

by Jaffna Special Correspondent

"To resolve the ethnic problem in Sri Lanka we said that peace talks should be held with the LTTE alone. We never said that they are the sole representative of the Tamils. There is no conflicting idea regarding the LTTE being given the overall power to have peace talks with the government. But it does not mean that we have to carry out their orders. If we are driven to take orders from the LTTE we may be driven to dissolve the party.

There is no other alternative" said V. Anandasangary MP and President, Tamil United Liberation Front at a discussion held at the TULF party office in Jaffna.

He further said that the TULF at any time will never work against the LTTE. He said that it was regrettable that the Jaffna Public Library was not opened even after ninety nine per cent of the works had been completed.

The former Jaffna Mayor Kandayan who worked tirelessly to have it opened during his tenure of office had been denied that chance. "I was one of those who flayed the EPDP and tore them into shreds in Parliament. In spite of this the EPDP Jaffna Municipal Council members did not show any animosity to my opening."

He pointed out that earlier when foreign representatives visited the North they met the TULF and had discussion with them on political and economic problems confronting the Tamils. Now all the foreign diplomats and representatives pay a visit to Kilinochchi and have talks with LTTE.

He said that former Jaffna Mayor Kandayan accepted the Mayorship amidst tension and threat to his life. He did a yeoman's service to Jaffna. But he is branded as a traitor today. Our party leader and martyr Amirthalingham too was branded as a traitor and murdered. N. Raviraj MP expressed the opinion that the forthcoming local government elections should be contested on the TULF ticket in the North and the East. That will enhance the people's credibility on and support to the TULF.
