New building for Meegoda Centre

by Hanwella group correspondent

Interior Minister John Amaratunge said that under the United National Front (UNF) Government the prime responsibility of the police is to protect the lives and properties of the people.

He was addressing a ceremony held in connection with the opening of a three-storeyed building, comprising a police station, an up todate post office and the Gamini Jayasuriya memorial hall at the Meegoda Economic Centre recently.

He said that since a large number of people come to the centre for business transactions, measures should be taken by the police to provide adequate security to them. Every person should have the liberty to make the purchases and leave the place without fear of being harassed by anyone, he said.

Minister of Rural Economy and Deputy Finance Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that this economic centre will be a great boon to the people and the further development of the country.

He said the produce of the farmer community in the Nuwara-Eliya, Badulla, Bandarawela, Uva-Paranagama, Ampara, Maradagahamula, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura areas are flowing into Meegoda, which has become a fast developing area. The Minister said that Rs. 5.2 million was spent for the construction of the new building while Rs. 70 million had to be spent for the economic centre. Everything was done with donations from the business sector, well- wishers and the area's resident, he said.

Indigenous Medicine Management Minister Sarathchandra Rajakaruna said that late Gamini Jayasuriya was a politician who always struck to his principles and opening a meeting hall as a mark of gratitude to him is praiseworthy.

Colombo District MP Jayantha Ketagoda, Inspector General of Police T.E. Anandarajah, K.D.P. Pathirana D.I.G., Homagama P.S. Chairman Manjusri Arangala also spoke.
