German-Sri Lanka bilateral negotiations on develop cooperation

The bilateral negotiations on development cooperation between Sri Lanka and Germany were held on March 20 at the Ministry of Finance, Colombo.

The Sri Lankan delegation was led by Charitha Ratwatte, Secretary, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Policy Development and Implementation and the German delegation was led by Jochen Kenneweg, Head of South Asia Division, Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The Ambassador for Germany in Sri Lanka Juergen Elias has participated at the negotiations.

This meeting is a follow up to the bilateral consultations between Germany and Sri Lanka held in February this year where strategies and priorities for development cooperation between the two countries were discussed and new commitments identified.

The priority areas for German development cooperation with Sri Lanka are; promotion of a dynamic market economy and qualified employment and poverty alleviation and conflict transformation.

The Government of Germany is an important bilateral development partner of Sri Lanka. At the bilateral negotiations held on March 20 the Government of Germany has committed a substantial increase in its assistance for the period 2003/2004.

The minutes of the meeting were signed at the Ministry of Finance. Jochen Kenneweg, Head of South Asia Division, Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development signed the minutes on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany and Charitha Ratwatte, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance and the Secretary to the Ministry of Policy Development and Implementation signed on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka, the Finance Ministry press release states.
