Movement to keep Kandy clean and green

A group of civic-minded residents and organisations have banded themselves together under the name 'Clean and Green Kandy Movement' to keep the city clean and improve the environment through tree planting and environmental conservation.

The historical, cultural and religious importance of the city of Kandy is internationally recognised. The UNESCO has included it as one of the world heritage cities. To live upto this image, the city will have to overcome changes introduced in an ad hoc and short-sighted manner, and provide space required for the expanding commercial sector. This will need political will, long-term planning, and the assistance of the citizenry.

To make a beginning, Dr. and Mrs. V. Steigerwald have taken up this challenge in their personal capacity to promote the private sector initiative 'Clean and Green' with a group of civic-minded citizens and others such as the Rotary Movement and Lions. The initiative will focus attention on keeping the city clean and green in the interest of sanitation, appearance and environment.

The committee is chaired by Mrs. Leah Steigerwald and is jointly sponsored by Central Finance and the Rotary Club of Kandy in association with the Lions Club of Senkadagala, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Central Economic Region. The Kandy Mayor Kesera Senanayake, the Deputy Mayor B. Aluvihare and M. H. Saleem Deen of the Muslim Traders Association are giving their fullest support to the movement to make it a success.

The members of the Clean and Green committee have met with the Mahanayaka of the Malwatta Temple and the Bishop of Kandy to seek their blessings for the programme. They have also visited schools as well as private sector and government organisations to discuss how they could get the assistance of school children and employees to keep their schools and workplaces clean and ensure proper disposal of solid waste etc.

The programme will be launched by improving cleanliness around the Kandy lake with the assistance of the Kandy Municipal Council. Clean and Green will install specially designed and fabricated garbage bins around the lake at a cost of Rs. 10,000 per bin. The Municipal Council will collect the garbage and dispose of it. The committee seeks donors who are willing to fund the construction of bins.

The first garbage bin will be ceremonially installed by the Mayor of Kandy near the spillway of the Kandy lake on March 26 on the birthday of late Mr. T. R. Rajan who initiated the project. Citizens of Kandy are invited to attend, state the organisers in a press release.
