Hikkaduwa UC Chairman shot dead

by Asanga Warnakulasuriya and Galle District special correspondent

Hikkaduwa Urban Council Chairman, Gamini Pinnaduwage (54) was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen yesterday at around 1.30 pm while he was in his office in Hikkaduwa.

Police suspect political motives behind the killing, Galle SSP Sisira Gunawardane told the Daily News last night.

He said that the Chairman had filed two court cases against his political rival.

SSP Gunawardane said that the gunmen had arrived in a motorcycle and had fired around 10-12 bullets from a 9mm shot gun when the staff of Pinnaduwage were at lunch.

Therefore, nobody could not identify the gunmen, he said.

Hikkaduwa ASP Ananda Wijesuriya said that at the time of the incident, the Chairman had returned to his office after a District Co-ordinating Committee meeting with the Minister of Public Administration, Management and Reforms, Vajira Abeywardena.

The Hikkaduwa Police are looking for the two gunmen who had fled in the motorcycle after the shooting. The body is kept at Karapitiya Hospital for a post mortem, which is scheduled for today, the ASP said.
