Indian troops kill nine Muslim rebels in Kashmir SRINAGAR, India, March 12 (AFP) - Indian security forces shot dead nine suspected Muslim guerrillas in separate overnight encounters in restive Kashmir, a police spokesman said here Wednesday. The official said four of the slain militants were gunned down early Wednesday in two separate encounters in the southern Kashmir districts of Poonch and Doda. Late Tuesday Indian troops and police officers shot dead three suspected militants in Doda's Jaganu village, the spokesman said. Indian troops killed two more militants in the northern Kashmiri districts of Baramulla and Kupwara overnight, he added. More than 37,500 people have died in Kashmir, India's only Muslim-majority state, since the anti-Indian rebellion started in 1989. |
