British police arrest 43 in child porn raids

LONDON, March 13 (AFP) - Forty-three men were arrested in London by British police following a US-led operation targeting Internet users who pay to access child pornography web sites, Scotland Yard said Thursday.

Around 350 officers swooped on suspects across London Wednesday. A large quantity of computer equipment was seized and the men were taken for questioning at police stations across the capital, a police spokesman said.

They were arrested on suspicion of the downloading and distribution of images of child abuse on the Internet.

US authorities handed British police a list of more than 7,000 people suspected of using their credit cards to access pay-per-view web sites containing child pornography.

The arrests formed part of an international operation to counter child pornography, codenamed "Operation Ore," which has led to the arrest of more than 1,600 Britons, including 50 police officers and Pete Townshend, guitarist from the rock group The Who.

"We are sending out a strong warning to those who think they can remain anonymous and escape the law by using the Internet to access abusive images of children," the police spokesman said.
