by Uditha Kumarasinghe

The Sri Lanka Federation of Youth Clubs (SLFYC) together with the Youth Affairs Ministry and the National Youth Services Council will commence a new youth development programme named "Youth Sri Lanka" throughout the country assisting youth to improve their creative talents.

Arrangements have been made to conduct this programme countrywide at district level. The first stage of this programme will be held at Anuradhapura Municipal Council Grounds from March 24 to 29, SLFYC Secretary Sujeewa Sampath told the Daily News yesterday.

Nearly 10,000 youth affiliated to 500 Youth Clubs in the Anuradhapura district will participate. A series of youth development programmes in cultural, education and sports fields will be conducted during the programme to identify the talents of youth and assist them to further enhance their abilities, he said.

Steps will be taken to set up a new Youth Development Fund which aims to assist Youth Clubs to effectively conduct their activities, he said.

SLFYC which represents nearly 40 per cent of country's youth population is the largest volunteer youth organisation in South Asia. At present nearly 9,343 Youth Clubs operate throughout the country with a total membership of 750,000 youths.

Meanwhile the Federation in collaboration with the National Integration Ministry has also implemented a Youth Exchange Programme to foster ethnic harmony among the youth of different communities.

According to this programme, Southern youth will go to North-East provinces and the North-East youth will come to the South to conduct youth development programmes. Under this programme, a group of youth from Moneragala district have already gone to Mannar for a one week study tour, he said.

The SLFYC has made arrangements to celebrate the National Youth Day which falls on May 23 on a grand scale. The federation will sell Youth Flags from May 23 to 29 to raise funds for the Youth Development Fund. This campaign will be conducted countrywide with the help of Youth Clubs, he said.
