The remaining work on the Duplication Road will finally go ahead after the Muslim Ladies' College received compensation and handed over the land to the Road Development Authority yesterday. The RDA paid Rs.29 million to the school, which had so far resisted pleas to hand over the land for the construction work. The school had planned to hold a demonstration against the RDA yesterday. Azath Salley, Deputy Mayor of Colombo, who came to know about the planned demonstration had notified Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and arranged a discussion with Minister of Transport, Highways and Civil Aviation Tilak Marapana and Minister of Education Karunasena Kodituwakku. They then decided to pay compensation immediately to the school. Salley with the Additional Secretary and Director Lands of the RDA delivered the cheque to the Principal. Matters were explained to the large crowd which had gathered at the school premises. |
