by Nadira Gunatilleke A Japanese children's delegation currently in Sri Lanka under the 'Bridge Club' program met Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr.Karunasena Kodithuwakku at his office yesterday, a Cultural Affairs Division spokesman said. He said that Japan has selected the Sri Lankan Bridge Club as the best Bridge Club in the world. The Education Ministry commenced a special program to send the ten students who scored the highest marks at the Year Five Scholarship Examination to Japan for a study tour. Two students who scored highest marks at the Advanced Level Examination were also sent to Japan under the same program. About 120 Sri Lankan students have visited Japan under this program so far. Several other countries in the world also sent students to Japan under similar programs and the students who toured in Japan have formed an organisation named 'Bridge Club' in their respective countries. The Japanese children's delegation from Fukuoka, Japan stay at Sri Lankan children's homes. They will donate Rs. 400,000 worth musical instruments and educational equipment to Kothalawala Vidyalaya, Kaduwela during their ten day stay here. About 100 pairs of spectacles will also be distributed among the needy at Pore Rajamaha Viharaya, Athurugiriya. A Sri Lankan children's delegation will participate at the 14 th Asia Pacific Children's Conference to be held in Fukuoka, Japan in August this year. |
