Continued power supply despite strike

The islandwide power supply continued uninterruptedly despite the week-long strike by a group of Middle Level Technical Officers of Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).

A spokesperson for the CEB told the Daily News yesterday that the Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya is scheduled to meet the strikers and representatives of all trade unions of the CEB to discuss power sector reforms due shortly and workers' concerns on promotions and salary increments.

The strike did not have a significant effect on the day-to day activities of the CEB, as the CEB engineers countrywide with the assistance of junior technical staff attended to technical faults promptly and restored the power supply, the spokesperson added.

He said that several rounds of discussions were held between the management and representatives of trade unions of the strikers and one round was held with Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya. But the discussions had ended without success.

Middle Level Technical officers demanded the immediate grant of what they claim as 'Long overdue promotions and salary increments'. According to a spokesperson from the unions over 1,000 members from Electrical, Mechanical and Civil superintendent unions, over participating in the strike.

The CEB is hopeful that the discussion with Minister Jayasuriya today will end the week-long strike, the spokesperson added.
