Peradeniya ragging suspects surrender

Ten second year arts students of the Peradeniya University suspected of ragging two male and three female new entrants to the arts faculty, surrendered before Kandy Chief Magistrate Leon Seneviratne, last evening (10). They were remanded till March 19.

The ten suspects first appeared with their lawyers at the Peradeniya Police Station and were produced before Court in the evening.

The suspects are alleged to have taken the five freshers to Ambekka in Udunuwara on March 3 on the pretext of attending a funeral and on the way back are alleged to have inhumanly tormented them. The victims were taken for treatment to the Medical Centre of the Peradeniya Medical College from where the three female students were transferred to the Kandy General Hospital.

Further investigations are proceeding under the direction of Peradeniya OIC, Chief Inspector K.M.S. Bowela.

A few more suspects are still at large.

Miss Pradeepa Thavarasa (12) of No. 23, St. Peter's Place, Bambalapitiya is suffering from an acute heart ailment (Tetrology of Fallots) and needs immediate heart surgery to save her life according to Dr. Murtaza Chishti, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon, Durdans Heart Surgical Centre, Kollupitiya.

Her surgery is estimated to cost Rs. 250,000. Pradeepa's father Sellathurai Thavarasa says the Presidents Fund has agreed to release part of the cost amounting Rs. 150,000 to facilitate this surgery. As he is presently unemployed he is unable to raise the balance Rs. 125,000 needed by himself. As such he would request kind donors to assist his daughter's cause by contributing their mite towards facilitating this surgery. All contributions could be remitted to Savings Account No. 039-029132-9 at the Hatton National Bank, Bambalapitiya branch.
