by Uditha Kumarasinghe The Agriculture and Livestock Ministry will seek the contribution of the livestock sector towards the country's development. The Ministry has made collaborative efforts with the leading private investors to immediately develop the livestock sector to suit modern day needs, Agriculture and Livestock Minister S.B.Dissanayake told the Daily News. The Minister said that he held discussions with leading investors and businessmen in the livestock sector including representatives of John Keells, Cargills (Ceylon) Ltd and Prima Ceylon Ltd. The discussion, focused on problems related to the livestock sector and hardships faced by the investors in this sector. "For the contribution of the livestock sector to be added to the national economy, there should be rapid development in the livestock sector and more avenues should be available for small and large scale investors to enter the livestock sector," he said. Dissanayake said the Ministry will formulate a programme to provide an opportunity to small, medium and large scale investors to commence business ventures in the livestock sector and overcome problems faced by the investors. The Ministry will also take action to provide quality chicks to businessmen who engaged in poultry farming. A programme to check the standard of chicken breeding farms, and the quality of chicks, is to be prepared The Ministry has made arrangements to set up 1000 maize villages and 1000 soya bean villages to provide maize and soya beans needed for producers for animal feed.
