Training courses for police personnel

The Police Higher Training Institute has arranged three courses - Human Rights Law Enforcement Course, Consortium Course and Prosecutors Course to educate Police personnel on their day-to-day activities.

This is one of IGP T. E. Anandarajah's 'Action Plan', programmes, Police Higher Training Institute DIG Gunasena Thenabadu said.

Police In-service Training Division, Director Senior SP Cecil Kariyawasam who is in charge of these courses said that Canadian International Development Agency's, Development Director Shiranee Mills is also assisting to conduct these courses.

The first Woman Senior Superintendent of Police Premila Samaradivakara is also assisting the Police Higher Training Institute to conduct these courses, Senior SP Kariyawasam said.

The first course for first batch of 30 Police Officers will be conducted on March 17.

The IGP observed that some OIC Stations and Crimes are unable to conduct cases in Magistrate's Court due to lack of knowledge and skills in Procedual Law. The In-service Training Division will conduct a two weeks Prosecutor Course for the Crimes OICs and Station OICs.

After completion of this course, the subsequent courses will be conducted through the In-service Training Division for Crime OICs and the other Police prosecutors of the Crime branches for further enhancement of their knowledge and skills in order to improve the quality of handling prosecutions in Magistrate's and Primary Courts.

After successful completion of these courses, a certificate will be awarded. The courses will be followed by a mock trial as well, the In-service Director said.
