by Prasad Purnamal The army was summoned to control violence in Puttalam where a clash between rival armed gangs left one person dead and two critically injured on Sunday. The gangs who went on the rampage also set fire to several shops in Puttalam. One person was abducted by a gang. "The clash occurred between supporters of two political parties and an underworld gang in the area," Police said. A Police curfew imposed in the Puttalam area was extended till 6 am today. No incidents were reported during the curfew period. The deceased was identified as Abdul Kader Riafdeen (24) alleged to be a supporter of the SLMC's Chief Puttalam Organiser. The Army and nearly 1,500 policemen have been sent to the area. Wayamba DIG Ashoka Ratnaweera who inspected the area has directed the police to arrest unruly persons. |
