First-ever Web Portal for Sri Lanka's Gem and Jewellery Industry

The Export Development Board of Sri Lanka has commissioned the award-winning web developer, Affno, to develop a state-of-the-art web portal for the jewellery, gemstone and diamond industries in Sri Lanka. The portal will target business and consumers (B2B and B2C) and promote gemstones and jewellery from Sri Lanka to the trade and consumers and facilitate trade between visitors to the site and the jewellery and gemstone companies represented. The web portal is a non-profit project and all funds raised will be reinvested in the portal for the management and marketing of the portal. This is the first ever such web portal for the gem and jewellery industry - which will present a consolidated image and information on the industry in Sri Lanka to interested consumers and the trade. While individual companies may have peg pages, the portal will the one gateway to information about the industry, its products and its trade members. The portal is scheduled to be launched end March, 2003.

Features of the portal include: 
* Promotion of Sri Lankan gemstones and jewellery, 
* Linkages between buyers and suppliers, 
* Individual pages for companies, 
* Links to other related gem and jewellery sites, 
* Online Forum for the trade, 
* Database for email promotion for trade and consumer, 
* Feedback forms and notice board, 
* Content and company search, 
* Online jewellery catalogues and 
* Information for consumers and the trade.

A web portal for the industry will serve to: 

* Help the industry develop a consolidated image, 
* Facilitate trade and contacts between buyers and suppliers in the global and local industry, 
* Develop a database of buyers and suppliers, 
* Develop a web-based market intelligence service, 
* Develop a cost-effective global promotional campaign for the industry, 
* Create synergy between the jewellery and gemstone industry and other leading industries, such as tourism, through sharing of information and promotional services.
