Tyronne shines on rain hit first day

St. Anthonys College, Vice Captain Tyronne de Silva stroked a brilliant 62 to reach 1000 runs for the season on the first day of Kandys "Battle of the Blues" against Trinity College which began at Katugastota yesterday. The Antonian winning loss elected to take first lease of the wicket. The match commenced 30 minuets late due to a wet wicket following overnight rains.

The Antonian opener Mohammed Rizlam 29 (5 four) and Priyan Withanage 62 (10 fours) found no terrors in the Lions attack and put on 86 before being Separated. That was when the usually oppressive Rizlan playing cautiously was run out.

But Tyronne de Silva who come at the fall of the first wicket played an entertaining innings pulling and driving with ease. The second wicket pair put on 43 runs before Priyan Withanage was bowled by medium pacer Mohammed Muneer for a fine 62 and he batted for 119 minutes and faced 82 falls.

But de Silva continued his assault on the Trinity bowlers and when he was 45 pushed the ball to extra cover to reach his 1000 run for the season and the first schoolboy from Kandy to do so. He was out stumped of the agile Chamira Punchihewa when he stepped out to hit 13 year old left arm spinner Sachith Pathirana for 64. De Silva hit 9 fours and a six during his stay at the wicket for 84 minutes are facing 56 balls. There was a minor collapse as the Antonian batsman in a bid to force the pace stamped from 180 for 2 to 197 for 6 - losing 4 wickets for 17 runs.

Rains which fell before tea put paid to chance of any further play with the Antonian score reading 216 for 7. Medium pacer Mohammed Muneer bowled will to capture 3 for 49 are. Thirteen year old left arm spenner Sachith Pathirana bowling a tidy length and often had the Antonians grouping took 2 for 36 and he was last of the six bowlers to be tried.
