Otters tennis tourney from March 15 to 30

The annual Otter Aquatic Club open ranking tennis tournament takes place on the club courts from the 15th to the 30th March, 2003. It is being partly sponsored by Union Assurance, who incidentally were the sponsors of last year's novices tennis tournament organised by the club. This was disclosed to the media at a briefing held on Wednesday at the Otters, by the Club Secretary for Tennis, Azaari Cader. This forty-year-old Otter Aquatic Club tennis tournament which has proved popular through the years drew as much as 220 entries.

Outstanding amongst them was Rohan de Silva who did well to be last year's triple crown winner. This year too there will be a large number of leading tennis players both in the junior as well as the senior categories. There will be 4 events for the juniors viz: Boys and Girls under 16 singles and boys and girls under 12 singles. The open events for the seniors are 5, which are the Men's and Women's Singles and Doubles and the Mixed Doubles. The two veteran events are the over 35 and over 55 singles.

The tournament which commences on the 15th of March will start at 7.30 a.m. on weekends and holidays and at 3.00 p.m. on weekdays. The winners and runners-up of the open and veterans events will receive attractive prize money. The juniors will receive certificates and trophies.

The General Manager, Marketing Union Assurance, Ramal Jasinghe who was present to hand over the sponsorship said his company had actively been engaged in the promotion of sports and involved itself in the development of youth and sport. He concluded saying that he looked forward to a long- term association with Otters and its tennis.

The director of the tournament is S. Sivasundaram whilst the secretary is Sriyani Gooneratne and the committee comprises M. A. Cader, Ward Beling, E. Pararajasingham, Chhaya Beling, Tilak Wickremasinghe and Fuard Jain. The SLTA representative is Bernard Perera and referee for the tournament is Walter Dias.
