News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Restoring peace, our prime objective - Minister The Government is totally committed to restore peace to the country by talking with the LTTE with international support and assistance, said Minister of Vanni Rehabilitation Noordeen Mashoor. He was the Chief Guest at the Inter-House Sports Meet of the Viruthodai Muslim Maha Vidyalaya in Puttalam recently. He said that the Prime Minister was able to release large sums of money to benefit the suffering community (Internally Displaced Persons - IDPs) affected by the ethnic conflict even though the Government was faced with a severe financial constraints. He pointed out that his Ministry spent around Rs. 155 million last year to help the IDPs in Mannar, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Puttalam, Anuradhapura and some selected areas in the Vanni region. He said around 15,500 displaced families from the North are living in 69 Welfare Centres and 84 Resettlement villages in Puttalam. Mashoor made an appeal to the public to extend their fullest support to the Prime Minister's peace initiative which was the only solution to regain the progress of the country. He said the dry rations provided by the World Food Program under the previous regime, has now being undertaken by the present Government for which large sums of money was being pumped. He said jobs will be provided to displaced persons as Youth Corps, volunteer teachers etc. |
